2 Timothy 1:7
God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.
As I have traveled over the years and ministered in different places there is one thing that I’ve seen much of in the body of Christ that shouldn’t be. Fear. But I’ve also noticed that many believers are not even aware of the level of the fear in their lives. The enemy has disguised it, labeled it as something else or even planted excuses in hearts so the individual doesn’t see the need to deal with it. It can also be accepted as “Christian normal” to be occasionally anxious, stressed or worried, but it’s rarely labeled as fear because after all, we know we’re not supposed to be afraid.
I’ve heard researchers say that there are supposedly thousands of different kinds of fear. Fear may be common to those who don’t know God, but fear should have no place in the life of a believer. God’s perfect love removes fear from us. We are not to tolerate fearful thoughts or fearful emotions, but instead choose with our will to keep a sound mind which is the mind of Christ. In other words, being perfected and rooted in the love of God brings us into a lifestyle free from fear. We see Who He is so clearly and live in Him so intimately that everything is small compared to Him. If God is for us, who can possibly be against us! If He is my reality, then every earthly reality must bow to His way! He will never leave me. He’s for me. His love for me is a consuming fire. Therefore, why would I fear?
There are so many examples I could give that reveal the subtle ways fear creeps into our hearts, but let me list just a few. For instance, we can pray and declare God’s will for someone else or ourselves and yet do it in fear! We’re praying BECAUSE we’re afraid, not because we’re confident in God and peaceful in our hearts. Or, during flu season we might hold our breath when someone sneezes or continually wash our hands etc. when we really need to understand that through what Jesus has done we are able to live immune from sickness. Don’t give flu a season and don’t give fear a place!
God wants us to have His likeness and that means fearing nothing because He fears nothing!
